“Marcus created his first Moon gate for us as a feature to remember my Mom. He has great vision and is a truly creative artist. Give him a task and he will create you a superb piece of stonework.”

“Marcus is a very talented, hard working craftsman. He is passionate about the great outdoors has build ( literally) his stone walling business from the ground up. Learning his skills by working and watching experts; he has gained incredible insights into the art of stone walling.
Marcus’s talents have shown he can plan a project and execute it to a high standard. For us Marcus has hand built several walls, rebuilt and faced some existing walls making our garden look beautiful.
We would highly recommend his services.”

“I’ve had a fascination for dry stone walling or ‘Dry Stane Dykes’ as my Scottish in-laws call it, for many years. So when we had a whole heap of Indian Sandstone left from an old patio, I wondered if I could make use of it in some sort of dry stone walling. Through searches on Pinterest I came across a beautiful sculpture called a Moongate which mixes traditional dry stone walling of old with a Chinese circular archway.
From searching #DrystoneMoongate I found Marcus James at Under The Wall on Instagram. On his page he had pictures of his work and a recent post of a stunning Moongate that he’d built. So I asked if he’d be interested in building one for us, making use of our old patio slabs. After a few messages he came up with a design and visited us in Surrey from his home in Somerset.
On meeting Marcus, we quickly knew we had found the right guy with his laid back, positive attitude. He was happy to make use of what we had and also suggested adding some Bath Stone from a Quarry near his home. We agreed to make a start a few weeks later after getting our local builder to lay a solid concrete foundation.
Seeing as Marcus lived quite far from us, we invited him to stay as we had a spare room. We could not of had a better guest. He was easy to have a round, and might I add, an outstanding Chef. Through rain and shine (mostly rain) he worked daily on the Moongate, incorporating all his knowledge of dry stack construction.
After three wet weeks of hard labour, Marcus pieced together a one of a kind sculpture in our garden. It’s absolutely stunning. From the stonework masonry to the delicate hand carved dragonfly in the keystone. We absolutely love it and we love Marcus. He is skilful, artistic and an all round lovely fella.”
